How to Keep your Eye Out for those Diamonds in the Rough in a Second Hand Shop

Shopping at second hand clothing stores is a great way to save money.  Many people enjoy the thrill of shopping at a thrift store and consider this kind of shopping a treasure hunt.  Thrift stores have a wide variety of clothing and house wares at prices that can’t be beat.  There are some basic rules that you should follow when shopping in thrift stores in order to save you time and help you avoid buying on impulse.

First, make a list of items that you need such as particular clothing sizes that your children need or household items that you would like to acquire.  Lists will help you keep to a budget and help you avoid purchasing bargain items that you will never use.  Preparing a clothing list is easy.  Simply go through your closet and separate out the items that no longer fit or are no longer your style.  These items can be donated to the thrift store or sold to a clothing re-seller.  Make a list of the items you now need and shop from that list.

If you are looking to buy appliances or furniture, a thrift store can be a great place to start.  Many people donate big-ticket items, especially when they are re-decorating their homes.  You may find both small and large appliances at these stores including washer and dryer combos, living room sets, sofa beds, children’s bedroom suites and rocking chairs.  When buying these types of items second hand, ask for warranties if there are any and what the return policy of the store is.  The last thing you need is a washing machine that doesn’t work, even if it only cost you fifty dollars.  If you are purchasing furniture be sure to check all of the cushions, legs and moving mechanisms, especially for sofa beds, before you buy them.

The second most important rule of shopping in thrift stores is to know when their sale days are.  Many stores offer sales for seniors on certain days and tag sales on other days.  Knowing when these sale days are can save you big bucks.Â
