Creative Tricks in Money Management

Everyone knows that a dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to, especially in the current market. It is becoming difficult to find ways to save money. If you are like many people you will all ready be following a money management plan or strict budget. But how do you save money on things like gifts? You want a gift to be a reflection of your feelings for the person you bought it for, but you also have to think about your budget.

There are quite a few ways to stick to a money management plan while also being a bargain hunter. Apart from shopping actively all year; browsing clearance racks and discount stores and putting gifts to the side for a later date, clever gift-givers will also use creativity.

Give time as a gift: make a book of coupons for chores like lawn mowing, babysitting or laundry day. Provide “vouchers” for a lunch date, or coffee at a local bakery. Set aside the funds for what you are promising and you will be able to stick to your money management plan when the gift is “redeemed”.

Re-gift: Have something that you received as a gift but never used? Look at it creatively to see if it is an appropriate item for a friend or family member. But be careful and discreet when re-gifting, you don’t want to offend the original giver. Instead of letting that set of candles your sister gave you sit and gather dust, why not add them to an inexpensive basket along with some bath salts, and give a friend a mini-spa?

Think outside the box: a gift does not have to come wrapped up with a bow. Make an annual donation to a charity in honor of a special friend or family member. This is also a great idea when teaching money management skills to a child or young person, and will educate them about the true value and meaning of a gift.

Certified Quality in Diamond Jewelry

If you are just beginning to shop for a piece of diamond jewelry you will have all ready heard all about the “Four Cs” of diamond buying: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. But the most important “C” is not frequently mentioned: certificates.Having some knowledge about diamond grading is mandatory if you want to find the right diamond jewelry at the best price. Knowing about grading will also help you to know what the fair price is for a piece of diamond jewelry or a loose stone. But if you are buying diamond jewelry without a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America, the American Gem Society, or other reliable gemological laboratory, you are putting yourself at risk. This is because while many jewelers and jewelry stores will provide an “appraisal” on your diamond jewelry purchase it is not the same thing as an official certificate.

A certificate issued by one of the groups mentioned above guarantees a standardized method of diamond grading performed in a lab by a trained gemologist. It is easier to think of a certificate as a map of any diamond; listing exact measurement and weight and professionally commenting on the cut and clarity. This is not an appraisal, it is an official analysis.

When buying diamond jewelry it will be a guarantee of quality if a jeweler, jewelry store or Web site will provide a certificate with each diamond jewelry purchase. Buyers are free to shop around for the best deals when they know exactly what they are buying. Certificates will allow a shopper to compare one diamond of a certain weight and quality with another diamond of similar weight and cut to see which jeweler or jewelry store is offering the best prices. While the market value of diamond jewelry may change or fluctuate, the quality of a stone is permanent so it pays to have a guarantee.

Choosing The Right Vacuum Cleaner

As history indicates, the first model vacuum cleaner wasn’t even a vacuum cleaner at all, more of a carpet sweeper. This was invented by a man named Daniel Hess, who in 1860 patented a machine that featured rotating brushes on the bottom and bellows that helped to create suction.

However, there is no evidence that this very machine was ever produced. Some 40 years or so later, in 1908, James Spangler of Canton, Ohio received a patent for the very first portable electric vacuum cleaner. It was in fact his cousin in law, William Hoover, who lent his name to the legendary company that produces quality vacuum cleaners even today.

For more than 150 years, the vacuum cleaner has been improved upon greatly. From doing your weekly vacuuming of your home, doing a spring cleaning, or simply leaving the vacuuming up to the robot, there is a vacuum out there suited to your needs. With upright, canister, HEPA filtered, bagged and bagless, there is always a vacuum cleaner for your needs on the market. Read the rest of this entry »

Buyers Guide

Deep cleaning vacuums
The typical features with these types of vacuums include rotating brushes that agitate the carpet pile and loosen the dirt for better clean. There are some models that offer a handy automatic tool conversion button or switch that you can push or flip as you move from carpet to hardwood floor.

Hand held vacuums
Hand held vacuums are light weight, can be corded or cordless, and you can even mount most of them on the wall if you prefer. The performance of the cordless models will depend on the charge of the battery, as the battery power drops, so will the suction power.

The two types of hand held vacuums include straight suction and suction with a power brush. If you are considering a hand held vacuum cleaner, you should consider its primary purpose, if you plan to use it on a regular basis or occasionally on smaller jobs. Read the rest of this entry »

Bagged Versus Bagless

As with most things in life, there is really nothing free.  The two most claimed advantages to bagless vacuum cleaners were lower operating costs and better performance.  As far as the cost issues go, all vacuums must filter the exhausting air they use to carry the dirt into the collection area, as they would otherwise simply pick the dirt up from the floor and spit it right back out.

Whether you have a bagless HEPA filter, a pre-filter, or disposable bags, they all need to be changed at some point.  With the average life of a vacuum cleaner, you can expect to spend the same on either collection system for filters, but if you value your time, you can expect to spend quite a bit more on a bagless system. Frugal and Safer Air Fresheners

Most commercial air fresheners do not freshen the air at all. Instead, they mask one odor with another, coat your nasal passages with an undetectable oil film, or diminish your sense of smell with a nerve-deadening agent. For a safer alternative, you may wish to try one of the following; not only will your home smell as fresh and clean as it is, you will also find yourself feeling healthier.

*Distribute partially filled saucers of vinegar around the room or boil 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 1 cup of water to eliminate unpleasant cooking odors. Read the rest of this entry »

Frugal All-Purpose Baking Mix

Pre-packaged store-bought box mixes are expensive. Have you considered homemade alternatives? Made-from-scratch mixes are healthy, cost beneficial, store well, and taste great. Often times, you’re paying for the packaging of commercial “convenience” foods and you don’t have any control over the additives and preservatives they contain. When making your own mixes, you tailor the ingredients, so have control over the quality and quantity.

Making your own bulk mixes is a great way to stock your pantry. Creative containers make homemade mixes a terrific frugal gift idea too. There’s something deeply satisfying when cooking from scratch. It takes some minimal preparation, but many of the ingredients are already a staple in your pantry. It’s not as time consuming as you may think. Read the rest of this entry »
